More detail on this person: Granville Ray Amos Obituary On February 26, 2026, retired Marine Corps Brigadier General Granville Ray Amos returned home to the Lord. His boisterous life was marked by devoted service rooted in love for his country and his family. Granville was affectionately called "Granny" by his Marine Corps brothers - a name that followed him long after his military service ended. He was most proud, however, to be called "Dad" by his three children and "Grandpa" by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Born on September 30, 1943, in Culpeper, Virginia, to James and Ruth Amos, Granny grew up understanding the value of hard work. He earned a football scholarship to the Virginia Military Institute and graduated in 1965. Shortly thereafter, he married the love of his life, Rita, beginning a marriage that spanned 61 years. Rita stood faithfully by his side from the time they met at age 15 in high school until his final breath. Granny served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1961 to 1993, retiring with the rank of Brigadier General. During his distinguished career, he was awarded the Legion of Merit along with two subsequent gold stars recognizing his many acts of exceptional service. Though his accomplishments and involvements are too numerous to fully list, he often reflected most on leading the Marine Air Assault in Grenada in 1983 and on his service in the Gulf War and Vietnam. While his devotion to his country took him across the world, Granny's heart was always in Fredericksburg. He loved hunting with his two sons, doting on his daughter and wife, riding rollercoasters with his grandchildren, and attending every sporting event and milestone he could. Granny was a man of impeccable character with a compassionate heart. His steady presence, sheepish grin, and unmistakable sense of humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was a great Marine and an even better man. Granny is survived by his wife, Rita Amos; three children Gra (Lisa), Gregory (Kristen), and Rebecca (Jim); eight grandchildren Laken, Madison, Tre, Madalyn (Garret), Grant, Taylor (John Hayden), Reagan, and Jordan; four great-grandchildren, with a fifth on the way, Skylar, Carter, Riley, and Amos; his siblings, Jerry Amos and Patricia Johnson; and several nieces and nephews. A service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, in the Medal of Honor Theater at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, 1775 Semper Fidelis Way, Triangle, VA 22172. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A reception will be held immediately following the service.
