More detail on this person: William H. Hughes Jr. FL United States HUGHES William H. Hughes Jr. (Bill), 61, of Macclenny, FL passed away February 28, 2008. Mr. Hughes was born on September 6, 1946 in Columbia, SC to the late William H. Hughes Sr. and Elizabeth Jones Hughes. He grew up in Columbia and graduated from Dreher High School in 1964. He attended Midlands Tech and the University of South Carolina. Mr. Hughes served with distinction in the US Army from 1967 thru 1971. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was assigned to the 1st Cavalry AVN Battalion (Assault Helicopters) as a helicopter pilot from 1967 - 1968 and the 175th Assault Helicopter Company as a maintenance officer in 1971. While serving his country Cpt. Hughes was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross w/3 oak leaf clusters, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal w/3 oak leaf clusters, Vietnam Service Medal w/triple Bronze Star attachment, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon w/device and Army Aviator Basic Badge. After his honorable discharge he was employed by the FAA as an air traffic controller until he retired in 2002. He resided in Macclenny, FL for the last 9 years after living in Jacksonville, FL for 25 years. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Macclenny, FL and enjoyed gardening, working outdoors and volunteering at the Samaritan Food Bank as long as he was able. He is survived by his wife of 38 U years, Karen Allison Hughes of Macclenny, FL; his children: Jennifer Wilson (James) of Macclenny, FL, Catherine Spath (Michael) of Jacksonville, FL and William H. Hughes III of Macclenny, FL ; his sisters: Nan Rogers (James) of Charleston, SC and Helen Lindsay (William) of St. Mathews, SC, 11 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 3, 2008, at 11:00 am at First United Methodist Church in Macclenny, FL. with Pastor Thomas Pope officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 2, 2008 at the V. Todd Ferreira Funeral Home. The arrange- ments are under the care and direction of V.
