More detail on this person: David Elmer Helton LEXINGTON - Funeral services for David Elmer Helton, 69, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel with interment in Fort Jackson National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, P.O. Box 7275, Columbia, SC 29202. Mr. Helton was born July 16, 1941 in Ashville, NC and passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2010. He was a son of the late Miles and Emma Swaim Helton. After 36 years of active duty, he retired as Commandant of the Warrant Officer Career Center at Fort Rucker. Mr. Helton had served two tours of duty in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. He had also served a tour in Thailand as the US Army Advisor to the Thai military. He served a regular tour in Korea and over the years he and his family also served tours in Germany, Ohio, California, Alabama, Texas, Virginia, Washington, DC and Kentucky. At the time of his retirement, he received the Honorable Order of Saint Michael, Gold. His other military honors included the Purple Heart and the Silver Star. Mr. Helton is survived by his wife, Betty Reed Helton of Lexington, formerly of Canaan, Maine; children, Matthew Helton of Atlanta, GA, Kimberly Helton of Denver, CO and Michele Helton of Lexington; grandchildren, Joushua and Kaci Helton of Atlanta, GA and Skyler and Logan Helton of Lexington; sisters, Shirley Walters of Elkin, NC and Melinda Dufford of Columbia; brother, Gary Helton of California and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents.
