More detail on this person: Joe C. Haire OXFORD - Joe Cotten Haire, 58, of 4135 Somerset Drive died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, at his home after a brief bout with cancer. He was the son of the late Joe B. Haire and a native of Stanly County. He was a captain in the U.S. Army, graduating with honors as a military flight instructor and serving two tours of duty in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. He returned to Albemarle and graduated with honors from Stanly Technical College, earning an associate's degree in biomedical technology, business administration, accounting and computer programming. While attending school, he worked full time for Metropolitan Life Insurance and later for Federal Pacific Electric. After graduation he worked for Sun Health and then Jeffries Southern Processors before opening and operating his own business, Medical Equipment Service Co. His business provided diagnostic services for medical equipment at both Granville Medical Center in Oxford and Chatham Hospital in Siler City. A longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Albemarle, he regularly attended Tabbs Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Joe C. Haire Jr. and Christopher Lee Haire, both of Oxford; his ex-wife, Darlene Tew of Garner; four brothers, James Haire of Springfield, Ill., Johnny Haire of Raleigh, Pat Haire of Henderson and Paul Haire of Van Nuys, Calif.; and his mother, who lives in Albemarle. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rebecca H. Overcash. The family will receive friends at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home, 503 College St., from 7 to 8:30 tonight, with a funeral to be conducted at 8:30 by the Rev. Lemar Wheeler. Visitation will again be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Hartsell Funeral Home in Albemarle before graveside services at 3 p.m. Friday in Stanly Memorial Gardens of Albemarle. Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of services.
