LT. COLONEL (RET.) LEROY EDWARD JONES JR
Colonel Jones was born June 18, 1936 in
Aliquippa, Pa., to the parents of Leroy and
Alberta Jones.
He attended Elementary School in High Point N.C.,
Middle School at Palmer Institute and Dunbar High
School in Wash. D.C. He participated in football,
track and swimming in High School. He received a
four year scholarship to Tennessee State
University, Nashville, Tenn. After graduating in
1956 at age 19, he started the first Swimming Team
at Southern University in Baton Rouge, La., and
served as Head Coach until he was drafted into the
Army in 1960. He retired in 1980 as a Lt. Colonel
after two tours in Vietnam with over 3,500 combat
flying hours. He also served two tours in Korea
and one tour in Germany. He is a Master Aviator
and is qualified in both fixed and rotary wing
aircraft.
Colonel was inducted into the Tennessee State
University Sports Hall of Fame in 1984, along with
Wilma Rudolph, Ed "Too Tall " Jones, Mae Faggs,
Ed Temple, and many others. In 1986, he was
inducted into the Washington, D.C. Swimming Hall
of Fame.
He moved to Houston in 1981 and entered the
H.I.S.D. system as a Junior R.O.T.C. Commandant(
Barbara Jordan High School for Careers, and Sam
Houston High School.) In 1991, he became
Assistant Principal at Waltrip H.S. until he
retired in 2000.
"The Colonel", as he is known to family, friends
and associates, has been a member of Payne
Chapel for almost 30 years. He has served as
Trustee, Steward, Pres.of Sanctuary Choir, Pres.,
V.P., Parliamentarian, D.O.L.A.of the Local Lay
Organization. Delegate to Annual Conferences,
Connectional Lay Biennial, and General
Conference. He served as Church Financial
Administrator of Payne Chapel untiJ his health
failed. He served as State Lay Treasurer for 8
years, served on 10th Dist.Finance team for over
14 years. Was a member of the Connectional
C.L.E.D.C. Board of the Lay Organization.
"The Colonel" was a life member of Kappa Alpha
Psi Fraternity, and served as Polemarch of the
Galena Park Chapter.
"Colonel" is survived by his loving wife, Doris,
daughters-Monita Flemming,Kelly Oakley, Alberta
Jones, sons, Arby Fields(Josetti), Smedga
Flemming( Gwen), Keith Jones, grandchildren-
LaQuita , Arby II, Jamia, Kel, DeYonna, Simone
and Jonte', great-grandchildren-Kobe, and Jada,
sister-Joberta Patrick(Jack), brother- Joseph
Scott Jr(Leilani).God-son-Brandon Cross,
sisters-in-law -Muriel Harper, Marcella Tennison,
Maxine Scott, brother -in-law Jerome Peace (Zella)
and a host of nieces, nephews, other God-children-
Mark &Sheila Feggins, and Rodrick Moore.
Lt. Col (Ret) Leroy E Jones passed away on August
11, 2016. Visitation will be held on Saturday
August 20, 2016 at 10a-11:55a.
