Col. Fred M. Liebert, USAF (Retired), 76, who passed away after a lengthy illness at 12:12 p.m., Tuesday, January 12, 2006, at the Medical Center of Southwest Louisiana in Lafayette. The Rev. Mr. Paul Matte, Deacon at St. Edmond Catholic Church in Lafayette will officiate at the services. Interment will be in Fountain Memorial Gardens in Lafayette. Lt. Col. Fred M. Liebert, USAF (Retired) was a native of Groves, Texas and a resident of Lafayette. He was a 1952 SLI graduate with a degree in industrial arts. During his college career he played football for the then Bulldogs and was active in ROTC. He was a veteran of the military, having served in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. During Vietnam he flew rescue and recovery with the Jolly Green Giant Helicopter Group. After the military he was employed by PHI and retired with eight years of service when illness ended his career as a pilot. Survivors include his wife, the former Nell Leger, of Lafayette, originally from Iota, five daughters, three sons, thirteen grandchildren and one sister. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fritz Liebert, an immigrant from Germany, and the former Dora George of Acadiana and one brother, Ernest Liebert. Sons and grandsons were pallbearers.
