More detail on this person: Helicopter crashes, pilot dead COTTONPORT (UPI) - A helicopter disintegrated in mid-air and fell into an abandoned building here Wednesday, killing the pilot. Charles W. McGilvery Jr., of Cottonport was piloting the Mark 5 Tomcat cropdusting helicopter about 4:20 p.m. when pieces of the craft began to break loose, said Avoyelles Parrish Sheriff Bill Belt. The craft nosedived into downtown Cottonport and struck an abandoned building two blocks from the Town Hall. "He was new to the area and going up for orientation of the area when, according to witnesses, portions of the aircraft just broke off and tumbled down," said Belt. "Debris was scattered in a 150-yard radius around the scene." The crash ignited a small fire in the building, but McGilvery was pulled from the craft before it caught fire. The helicopter's tail section sprawled atop a nearby metal building. The cause of the crash has not been determined, Belt said, but Federal Aviation Administration investigators had been called to the scene.
