More detail on this person: William L Merrill COLUMBUS, GA - Capt. (Retired) William L. Merrill, 78, of Columbus, died Friday, April 16 at his home. Merrill was born on Feb. 15, 1926 in Sacramento, Calif., son of the late William L. Merrill and Elizabeth Woods Merrill Anderson. He has lived in Columbus since 1958. He was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class at St. Luke United Methodist Church and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Columbus. He graduated in 1943 from San Juan High School in Sacramento and then graduated from Michigan State College in 1951, where he earned a Bachelors Degree in Public Administration, and then received a Masters Degree in Education from Auburn University. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years during World War II and retired from the U.S. Army after 18 years of service where he served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. After his military career, he worked for the Muscogee County School District for 22 years until his retirement. Survivors include his wife, Glenda J. Merrill of Columbus; mother-in-law, Kathleen M. James; sons, Michael G. Merrill of Sacramento, Daniel O. Merrill of Grand Rapids, Mich., Dennis P. Merrill of Columbus and Peter J. Merrill of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; daughters, Patricia M. Bennefield of Arden, N.C., Pamela M. Derrick of Hamilton, Ga., Mitzi Gaynor Youngblood of Albany, Ga., Kathy Gaynor of Tallahassee, Fla., Laura Gaynor of Newberry, S.C., and Robbie M. Monfort of Columbus; and 12 grandchildren.
