Niles, 67, of The Villages died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002. Born in Joplin, Mo., he moved to The Villages in 1991 from Yorktown, Va. He was a charter member of St. George Episcopal Church, The Villages, where he served as a lay Eucharist minister and was a member of the church vestry. Survivors include his wife, Nancy De Wees of The Villages; son, Donald De Wees of Ft. Campbell, Ky.; brother, Steven De Wees of Kansas City, Mo.; and two grandchildren. All Faiths Cremation Society, The Villages. Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Gary W. Niles, 67, of The Villages went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002. He was born in Joplin, Mo., and moved to Lady Lake in 1991 after serving 27 years in the U.S. Army. He attended the University of Missouri; was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity; and was an avid golfer and tennis player. While serving in the U.S. Army, he attained the rank of lieutenant colonel; served two tours of duty in the Republic of Vietnam as an army aviator. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star (three awards), the Meritorious Service medal (two awards), the Air Medal (23 awards), and the Master Army Aviator badge. He was a charter member of St. George Episcopal Church, where he served as a lay Eucharist minister; was a member of the church vestry and was always there for others. He was preceded in death by his son Charles Scott and daughter Elizabeth Ann. Survivors include his wife, Nancy; son, Ronald of Ft. Campbell, Ky.; brother, Steven of Kansas City, Mo.; and two grandchildren, Scotty and Merisa. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at St. George Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Roger E. Miller and the Rev. Canon Dr. Steven W. Raulerson officiating. Inurnment will be at 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla., with military honors provided by the 416th Transportation Company, Hunter Army Airfield, Ga. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Lake and Sumter, 12300 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778 or St. George Episcopal Church Building Fund, 1250 Paige Place, The Villages, FL 32159.
