Joseph Austin Nelson, U.S.M.C., age 88, died Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at CarolinaEast Medical Center. Col. Nelson was a naval aviator, serving from 1942 through 1973, with distinguished service in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. From 1969 through 1972, Col. Nelson was commanding officer of MAG 26 and MCAS New River. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Virginia Nelson; two sons, Dan Nelson and wife, Judith, of Dallas, Texas, and Dr. David Nelson and wife, Sheila, of Birmingham, Ala.; and one daughter, Susan Sauer and husband, Dr. Ronald Sauer, of Wheaton, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. The family will have a private burial on Sunday, Jan. 24 in Kenbridge, Va. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at Faith Evangelical Bible Church in Newport. There will be a fellowship time with refreshments immediately following. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are requested for Faith Evangelical Bible Church, 8170 U.S. 70, Newport, NC 28570. Woodbridge Funeral Home of Havelock assisted the family with the arrangements.
