More detail on this person: David Leonard Sims went home to the loving arms of his Savior on November 12, 2025. He was born on January 22, 1941, to Leonard "Fuzzy" Sims and Mary Lucille Sims. His father's work in the oilfield took the family across the country, but they eventually settled in Lake Charles, where David graduated from LaGrange High School in 1959. There, he excelled on the basketball court and developed a lifelong love of teamwork and perseverance. David continued his education at McNeese State University, earning a degree in education. While pursuing his master's degree, his former basketball coach introduced him to the love of his life, Brenda Hanchey, who was also studying education. The two were married in 1967. David's ROTC commitment led him into military service, including a tour in Vietnam in 1970, where he served as a helicopter pilot in an Air Cavalry Assault Unit. He surpassed the 30-day survival average for pilots and completed his tour with numerous medals and commendations for valor, including the Silver Star. After returning home, David founded Sims Insulation Company, later expanding into air conditioning. He eventually partnered with his lifelong friend John Tenney, and together they operated the business until their retirement in 2003, when they proudly passed the torch to the next generation. Following retirement, David and Brenda purchased a beautiful waterfront home on Toledo Bend, where they shared many happy years together enjoying their mutual passion for fishing. David loved fishing, spending time with friends and family, playing cards, teaching his men's Bible study class, sharing his faith, and_above all_telling or hearing a good joke. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Brenda. Left to cherish his memory are his children: Rick Sims (Kaysha), Elese Sims Prejean (Kenny), Cory Sims, and Julie McWard Rogers (Tony); along with his grandchildren: Savannah, Evan, Hanna, Keighan, Conner, David, Austin, Abbey, Ava, Meghan, and Jillian. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at Trinity Baptist Church - North Venue at 5:00p.m. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. and continue until the time of service. Cremation has been entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Trinity Baptist Church Benevolence Fund or the Vietnam Helicopter P11ilots Association.
