Born on August 17, 1945, in Moline, Illinois, James lived a life marked by dedication and service. James proudly served his country as a Chief Warrant Officer 5 (CW5) in the United States Army, retiring after a distinguished career of almost 40 years. His commitment to duty and his exemplary service were hallmarks of his professional life. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Edward and Martha Winston, and his sister Martha Carol Winston. James is survived by his cherished wife of 48 years, Elizabeth Joanne Winston, who stood by his side through all of life's journeys. Together, they raised two loving daughters, Lora Ann Ballard Johnson (Ron) and Kiley Winston Morgan (Don), who brought him immense pride and joy. James's legacy continues through his grandchildren: Gerald Keith Ballard, Jr. (Lindsay), Christopher Jordan Ballard (Jordan), Winston Bryce Ballard (Leah), James Bridger Morgan, and Miles Woodburn Morgan. He was also blessed with five great-grandchildren Ryder Ballard, Jaxson Ballard, Skylar Ballard, Jack Ballard, and Baker Ballard, who will carry forward his memory. He is also survived by his siblings, Anne Dvorak (Todd), Mary Boerner, John Winston, and Mark Winston (Nancy). A funeral service to honor James's life will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at 3:00 PM at the Chapel of Parrott Funeral Home, with Rev. Jay Vineyard officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation prior to the service from 1:30 PM until 3:00 PM. Interment will follow at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date, where James will be laid to rest with the honors befitting his service to the nation. James Edward Winston will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family and his country. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
