1/Lt Schlie, Kenneth Martin was with the 54th, ChuLai Dustoff. We had the 54th & 68th Med Det's at ChuLai after Americal came on the scene & 11th & 198th Light Inf Bde's were added to ChuLai's AO. I was dusted off by the 54th when WIA 03/30/68 while with the 196th LIB; I returned to the 196th after 10 weeks and again was med evac'd the first mo. of my extension, went to Wm Beaumont Army Hosp, El Paso. When cleared for full duty I returned to VN & 68th (HA) in 07/69 as Flt Medic. The 68th had moved from the South just a month or so prior to my joining it. I spent 18 mos there; we covered the 11th & 198th LIB's with a field site at DucPho, 11th's HQ, (FSB Montazuma). 198th was headquartered S.W. of ChuLai. Lt Schlie & Wo1 Terrence A. Handley were killed in a mid-air while making a pick-up for the 198th, they collided with an OH-6 on departure from the PZ killing all crew & 3 WIA"S. It is a sad tale as Schlie & Handley were pretty green, they were in a borrowed acft (236th HA, DaNang) which came with the Crew Chief. The OH-6 spotter was KIA, but the pilot survived as they were low level on a ridge line. From: David Brassfield do68pappydave@earthlink.net April 2005.
