War Story:
I served with Tom and Larry, and know the details of their crash. The unit was D 1/1 Cav, 16th Gp, Americal Div, I corps, based in Chu Lai. Callsign Sabre They were working west of Hawk Hill, the 1/1 Cav LZ that was NE of Tam Ky. They were part of a pink team that had sighted a large group of NVA in the open, and were making gun runs on the target. Tom was Pilot, and Larry was gunner. The aircraft was observed to pull out late and "mush" into the ground in a near level attitude. medevac was reported to find no wounds on either pilot. No exhaustive crash analysis was done on the wreckage, so combat damage could not be ruled out. They were reported to be receiving fire during the run. Larry was from Virginia, and had just had a baby boy born to his wife in the states. Nick Lappos, Sabre 74, nlappos@miami.gdi.net
