Accident Summary:
AIRCRAFT ^67-17785^ WAS FLYING A RESUPPLY MISSION FOR ^COMPANY C, 1/9 CAV^, OUT OF FIRE SUPPORT BASE TO GRID COORDINATES ^YR 012105^. THE LANDING ZONE WAS A KICKOUT ZONE WITH TREES 100 TO 150 FEET HIGH. THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED ^FT. COMPTON^ LOADED WITH 32, 155 MM CONTAINERS FILLED WITH WATER APPROXIMATELY 40 POUNDS EACH, TWO BOXES WEIGHING APPROXIMATELY 40 POUNDS EACH, TWO PASSENGERS AND 800 POUNDS OF FUEL. ON DEPARTURE, THE AIRCRAFT INSTRUMENT READINGS WERE 6600 RPM, 35 LBS TORQUE, 100% N1 AND 38 COAT. AT THE KICK-OUT SITE, THE AIRCRAFT WAS STOPPED AT A HOVER WELL ABOVE THE TREES. A DESCENT WAS THEN MADE TO THE TREE TOPS FOR THE KICK-OUT. AT TREE TOP LEVEL THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO DESCEND INTO THE TOP OF THE TREES CAUSING THE BLADES TO STRIKE. THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED DOWN THROUGH THE TREES IMPACTING ON THE FRONT TOP LEFT SIDE AND THEN ROLLED OVER ON THE RIGHT SIDE. THE CREW CHIEF AND PERSONNEL ON THE GROUND PULLED THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER AND PILOT FROM THE CRUSHED COCKPIT. THE GUNNER WAS UNDER THE AIRCRAFT IN A BOMB CRATER. THE INFANTRY PERSONNEL WERE ABLE TO GET HIM OUT. THE PILOT AND CREW CHIEF SUSTAINED MINOR LACERATIONS AND BODY BURNS. THE GUNNER SUSTAINED MINOR LACERATIONS AND BROKEN RIGHT ARM. THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER DIED 21 MARCH 1970.\\
