War Story:
This aircraft was chalk 3 on an ARVN insertion. The flight went into the LZ 21 times. Flight lead was Richard Thompson. Bernie S. Goldenzweig was the aircraft commander of chalk 3. After they dropped off the ARVNs, they did a hovering 180 degree turn then got hit while at a hover. Bernie flew to Tan An aid station where Crouch was picked up by a Dustoff and taken to the 24th EVAC. Bernie then flew to Vinh Long to check out the aircraft and to clean it out with a fire hose. from Bernie Goldenzweig and Richard Thompson, July 2000.

It began with B Troop 7/1 Air Cavalry’s scouts picking up a battalion of NVA that had taken advantage of our invasion into Cambodia to try and capture the province of Binh Dai. Then the decision was made to get infantry troops on ground. I went in with a load of troops each time. There was heavy automatic weapons fire from the start. We flew in kicked out the troops and headed out for another load. On the 3rd insertion as we started to leave the LZ my pilot was hit. After I took care of Mr. Crouch the other pilot gained control of the aircraft. Crouch still had a pulse and we flew to a field hospital in Tan An. I unloaded Crouch, put newspaper on his seat, climbed into his seat and flew back to Vinh Long, our base. We refueled then taxied over to my revetment. We shut down. The pilot left. Sheet metal shop showed up and put a patch on the hole in the windshield. My gunnner and I washed away the days mess, I did any maintenance necessary. It was dark out. Messhall closed. Went to my hootch, slept. Got up and went flying the next day with a patch on the windshield reminding me every day for the the next 5 months. from Dave Foster, Crew Chief April 2019.
