Accident Summary:

Flying in formation on landing approach, the following aircraft saw an explosion in the area of the barrier filters. After a second explosion, the aircraft descended vertically, the main rotor separating from the aircraft. The aircraft crashed in an unsecured area and burned. It is assumed hostile fire or an accidental discharge of a grenade or weapon within the cabin caused the crash.


War Story:
Two V's of five - ten ship formation out of New Camau strip carrying ARVN troops at 2500 feet. One of the troops popped off an M-79 round accidentally. The helicopter rolled right, inverted, and beat itself to death. Four U.S. and eight ARVN killed. by Tom Latson, July 1998.
