Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "Troopers Discover VC Rice" dated 3 Feb 1968. Elements of the 2/501st Abn uncovered 2800 pounds of unpolished rice here recently when the paratroopers surprised a VC resupply force near the 2d Bde, 101st Abn Div's base camp. Two Huey gunships, accompanying Company D and the battalion reconnaissance platoon, fired upon some VC near the cache before the paratroopers arrived on the scene. Within a few moments the troopers quickly searched the area and discovered numerous .30 caliber rounds of ammunition and one assault rifle in addition to items of clothing and personal belongings. CPT Bobbie Lay, Bn S-2, said "Evidently there was a group of VC out there probably acting as a resupply source for a larger size enemy unit." The action resulted in four VC killed with no U.S. casualties.
