Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "Chopper Pilot Receives Two Distinguished Flying Crosses" dated 3 Feb 1968.
CPT John L. Gedelman a helicopter pilot with the 1st Bde, 4th Inf Div was recently presented with two awards of the DFCs in ceremonies at the base camp at Dak To. The first award was for Gedelman's actions near Jackson Hole, the Bde's old headquarters. A/1/8th Inf was in contact with an NVA force and needed a doctor and medical supplies. Disregarding the enemy fire Gedelman maneuvered his OH-23 helicopter into the area and successfully delivered the doctor and medical aid. Twenty-two days later, the CPT distinguished himself again while piloting an OH-23 helicopter in the same area. Arriving over the burning wreckage of a helicopter which crashed in hostile territory, he landed his craft and began checking out the dense undergrowth. His search located four injured survivors.
