Description: Four H-3's from the 37th ARRS were involved in a mission to recover 14 crewman from six USMC helicopters downed by hostile fire in the A Shau Valley. Despite friendly support from A-1E, AH-1, and UH-1 gunships and A-37s the H-3s were under constant enemy fire during the rescue. Leading the H-3s, MAJ Joe B. Green and his crew picked up four of the surviving Marines on his third approach. A second H-3, piloted by MAJ Jerry Griggs, picked up four more, and a third H-3, piloted by MAJ Stuart H. Hoad, picked up the remaining six marines.
