Operation MACARTHUR
Kontum Province, II Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Kontum
Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 30 Mar 1968 issue.
Action continued throughout the 4th Inf Div's MacArthur operational area as the Ivymen killed 16 NVA. Scout helicopters from the 7/17th Cav drew enemy groundfire while searching an area seven miles east of Cambodia and west of Kontum. The squadron's aero-rifle platoon was inserted into the area and killed four Communist soldiers in a brief firefight. Several hours later, the platoon came under small arms and automatic weapons fire from an estimated NVA company. The infantry immediately returned the fire and pulled back to a PZ where they were extracted. After the extraction, Air Force tactical airstrikes were called in to pound the area, resulting in one large secondary explosion. Enemy using grenade launchers and automatic weapons attacked an APC from the 2/1st Cav 1 1/2 miles north of Kontum on Highway 14. Elements of the squadron were quickly deployed to the scene of the attack and engaged the enemy, killing six NVA soldiers. They also captured two grenade launchers, two rifles and detained one suspect who was later identified as a member of a political indoctrination team operating in Kontum.
