Operation DELAWARE
Thua Thien Province, I Corps, South Vietnam
Location, A Shau Valley
Description: To begin DELAWARE/LAM SON 216, the 3d Bde, 1st Cav air assaulted the 1st and 5th Battalions, 7th Cav into the A Shau Valley. The NVA opened up with 37mm and 23mm AA weapons and ten helicopters were shot down while 13 others were damaged. The airmobile operations were temporarily halted while a less expensive approach was researched. Dense fog, intermittent thundershowers and late-season monsoon fronts passed through the area for the next four days. The 11th AVN Group battled the weather and antiaircraft fire to support the allied infantry and artillery in the valley from bases on the coast. Flights into the valley became impossible past noon of each day.
