Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "Stronghold Destroyed" dated 10 Aug 1968.
The sighting of 1,000 feet of trenches by an Aerial Scout team from the 7/17th Air Cav led to the disclosure of a freshly constructed enemy stronghold. The NVA stronghold was found wedged in the rugged mountainous terrain approximately 30 miles NW of Dak To. Enemy troop movement was detected along the trails leading to bunkers, AA guns and huts. The inspection tour of the NVA's construction site was received by a large quantity of automatic and AA weapons fire. The cavalry gunships and LOHs returned the fire with mini-guns, grenades and rockets. Three barrages of Air Force tactical air strikes and Arty fire silenced the ground fire.
