unit history information
for 20 SOS

For date 690415

20 SOS was a US Air Force unit
Primary service involved, US Air Force
Laos
Description: The abbreviated unit history states that another joint CH-3 and UH-1 operation inserted a 215-man force from a FOL (forward operating location) into a strategic position overlook an enemy-controlled road. Five CH-3s and three UH-1 were escorted by eight A-1s Hobo Skyraiders and a Raven FAC in an O-1. As the helicopters approached, four Hobos preped the LZ and suppressed fire coming from a nearby hill. On climb out, two helicopters from the first wave took fire. The second wave turned right as they took off to avoid this area. By the time the helicopters returned with the second half of the assault force, the original LZ was under mortar attack, so an alternate LZ was selected. The second wave into it had to abort due to enemy fire. The Hobos and Hornets suppressed. The rest of the insertion was successful.
